WELCOME TO THE CENTRE OF ZANZIBARI HISTORY
St. Monica's Hostel

is in the grounds of Christ Church Cathedral, Zanzibar.
The main building used to be a hostel of nuns & the annex was a missionary hospital, built over slave chambers.
After the abolition of slave trade in 1873, the Cathedral was built on the site of the former slave market. The market was an open space surrounded by small houses & the whipping post stood at the centre, exactly where the High alter now stands.
When staying at St. Monica's Hostel do take the opportunity to have a tour of the Cathedral. For (US) the tour guide will show you all these sites.
